M.S. in Education – Walden University

The M.S. in Education program of Walden University is fully online and centers on the strategies that would lead to greater student and teacher achievement. It puts emphasis on four themes namely Teacher Professionalism, Cultural and Linguistic Diversity, Supportive Learning Environments and the Teacher as a Facilitator for Learning. Developed by K-12 educators for K-12 educators, the assigned faculty can fully understand the students’ day-to-day pressures and professional needs. Its various specializations align with national standards and combines current theory with practical strategies; students are encouraged to apply new skills in the classroom thus leading to excellent outcomes while offering access to recognized experts in the field.

Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment (Grades K-12)

Responding to the goal that all children can learn, this specialization provides for institutionalizing standards in grades K-12 to level the playing field regardless of socio-economic conditions, ethnicity or learning differences while suggesting the same achievement goals for all students. Its content focuses on how teachers can best align their curriculum with state and local content standard.

Educational Leadership

This specialization provides an opportunity for classroom teachers to learn more about what it takes to be a private or public K-12 school educational leader. It is designed for educators who want to take a larger leadership role in their school or district. This curriculum however, does not lead to licensure/certification as a principal or assistant principal except through the Future Texas Administrators Program.

Elementary Reading and Literacy (Pre K- 6)

A child should be provided with the right foundation for future success and a key element on this is the development of their reading and literacy skills. This specialization addresses the technology-oriented literacy landscape of the 21st century while providing the latest research and practical strategies to increase students’ achievement.

Elementary Reading and Mathematics (Grades K- 6)

The two most foundational areas of the K - 6 curriculums are reading and math. Early success in these critical areas not only helps students to have a jump-start in school but also for later success in the world beyond the classroom. Teachers can contribute much to their students’ achievement when they are able to provide the best possible foundation in the most important subject areas.

Integrating Technology in the Classroom (Grades K -12)

This is a leading edge specialization that allows teachers to model various technologies that will engage and motivate all learners. With the increasing number of technologically savvy students, teachers must be able to utilize 21st century knowledge, strategies and skills that will create an effective and motivational learning environment. This environment seeks to prepare the learners to thrive in a global society.

Literacy and Learning in the Content Areas (Grades 6 – 12)

This specialization aims to help teachers of Grade 6 – 12 levels to improve the literacy skills of their students. It features research-based strategies in order to help prepare students for more complex, abstract and sophisticated learning in different content areas such as history, science, mathematics, social studies, English and others.

Mathematics (Grades K – 5)

Elementary teachers who want to strengthen their understanding of foundational mathematical concepts and motivate their students to improve their mathematical skills will appreciate this particular specialization. It is an online program that provides math content specific courses through a blend of representations on videotape with practical exercises using manipulative and visual aids.

Mathematics (Grades 6 – 8)

Mathematics teachers of Grades 6 – 8 can be helped to demonstrate high competency in their content area through this specialization. They will learn research-based strategies and real-world applications that would facilitate improvement in their students’ achievement. This specialization addresses both content and process standards as it aligns with the Principles and Standards for School Mathematics of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.

Middle Level Education (Grades 5 – 8)

Based on the quality of standards set for by the Middle Level Teacher Preparation and as approved by the National Middle School Association and the NCATE, this program provides knowledge and skills pertaining to young adolescent development, organizational structure, curriculum, pedagogy, assessment and content knowledge that are focused on this particular age group.

Science (Grades K – 8)

Building an understanding of core science concepts through experiencing the nature of the scientific process is facilitated by this specialization particularly for science teachers in grades K – 8. This is designed to happen in their own learning while completing inquiry-based science investigations. Educators will consider the implications for teaching upon reflecting on this new knowledge.

Teacher Leadership

For classroom teachers who are passionate about making a difference in education, this specialization presents an ideal program choice. Educators can build upon their existing expertise with dynamic skills that can help address key challenges such as parent involvement and student achievement. Learning more about one’s leadership style or leveraging the latest research to guide decisions are achieved thus making it possible to lead with greater confidence in both the classroom and learning community.
